In 1935, America was a different place. It was 16 years since one war and seven years before another was to begin. That other America was worlds away from such ideas as computers, television, governmental restriction, and an energy crisis.
Yet, an institution was started then, based on ideas which have become relevant as the years have passed: Sales and Marketing Executives International Local Sales Managers' club had been formed for years before 1935. There was a growing recognition that something more was needed to show that selling was a profession. In an effort to organize an exchange of ideas, methods, and experiences throughout the profession, SMEI was formed.
1935 a special meeting was held in New York city for the purpose of forming a national sales and marketing association. The idea was that each member would make his or her experience available to all. In return, each member would get the experience of dozens.
It was a simple concept, but it worked - and still works today.
